Venture Studio • SME Development • Economic Inclusion

Build ventures. Grow SMEs. Expand economic participation.

Cloud23 Ventures combines enterprise technology, venture building and market access to help African founders turn validated ideas and growing SMEs into resilient, scalable businesses — creating jobs, skills and local economic value along the way.

01The model

Two engines. One economic outcome.

One builds ventures inside Cloud23. The other builds capability in businesses we don't own. Both are judged on the same outcomes.

Engine 01

Venture Studio

We identify opportunities, validate business models, build enterprise-grade products and create the commercial foundation required to scale.

Cloud23-owned and co-created products, intellectual property and digital ventures — identified, validated, built, commercialised and scaled inside the group.

  • SaaS products and AI-native applications
  • Industry accelerators and automation frameworks
  • Data products and intelligence solutions
  • Licensing and subscription models

Engine 02

SME Growth & Impact

We help promising SMEs strengthen their technology, operations, commercial capability and enterprise readiness — turning access into sustainable participation.

External founders and SMEs supported through enterprise technology, product development, operational capability, go-to-market support, governance and access to enterprise customers.

  • Product and platform development
  • Operating and governance readiness
  • Commercial and go-to-market capability
  • Introductions into enterprise procurement

Both engines are measured on

  • Scalable businesses
  • Sustainable revenue
  • Jobs created and sustained
  • Skills transferred
  • Local supplier growth
  • Expanded access to enterprise markets
02Participation

Three ways in.

Pick the one that describes you. Choosing here preselects it on the application.

    Build a Venture

03The flywheel

How economic participation compounds.

Each turn makes the next one easier. That is the difference between a programme and a once-off intervention.

  1. 01

    Opportunity

A real problem with a customer willing to pay.

  2. 02

    Build capability

    Product, systems, governance and skills.

  3. 03

    Create market access

    Pilots, partnerships and procurement routes.

  4. 04

    Grow sustainable revenue

Recurring commercial relationships, not once-off support.

  5. 05

    Create jobs and skills

Employment and capability that stays in the business.

  6. 06

    Reinvest into the ecosystem

Proceeds and learning fund the next cohort.

Proceeds and learning fund the next cohort

04The process

From application to sustainable growth

Eight stages. You will always know which one you are in.

  1. 01

    Choose your pathway

Select Venture Build, SME Scale or Impact Partnership.

  2. 02

    Express interest

Complete a focused application describing the business, opportunity, traction and support required.

  3. 03

    Eligibility and fit review

Cloud23 assesses commercial potential, programme fit and possible socio-economic outcomes.

    Discovery clinic

Shortlisted founders participate in a structured business, product and impact diagnostic.

    Selection and Venture Compact

Successful applicants agree milestones, responsibilities, IP treatment, commercial terms and measurable outcomes.

  6. 06

    90-day build or growth sprint

Cloud23 and the venture work through validation, technology, operating readiness, go-to-market and governance milestones.

  7. 07

    Pilot and market access

Suitable ventures are prepared for customer pilots, partnerships, procurement opportunities and commercial introductions.

  8. 08

    Scale and measure

Track revenue, customers, jobs, skills, supplier development and business sustainability.

Participation does not guarantee investment, procurement, customer introductions, funding or B-BBEE recognition. Any ESD or SED recognition remains subject to the applicable Codes, supporting evidence and independent verification.

05What we contribute

Not just capital. Capability, customers and systems.

The exact support model is determined during assessment and documented in the Venture Compact.

  • Product and Technology

Architecture, engineering and delivery from the team that builds enterprise platforms for banks.

  • Business Model and Commercial Strategy

Pricing, packaging, unit economics and the route from offer to repeatable revenue.

  • Go-to-Market and Sales Enablement

Positioning, sales narrative, pipeline discipline and the ability to close.

  • Governance and Operational Readiness

The controls, reporting and process maturity an enterprise customer will ask you to evidence.

  • Talent, Skills and Leadership

Capability transferred into the business — not consultants who leave with the knowledge.

  • Enterprise Market Access

Preparation for pilots, procurement processes and commercial introductions where there is genuine fit.

How we operate

The standard we hold ourselves to.

  1. Enterprise with Purpose

We build commercially resilient ventures that solve meaningful problems and create durable economic value.

  2. Capability, Not Dependency

We transfer skills, systems and discipline so that founders can operate and grow independently.

  3. Market Access, Not Once-Off Support

We prioritise customers, pilots, procurement pathways and recurring commercial opportunity.

  4. Founders as Partners

We respect founder agency, protect pre-existing intellectual property and make commercial terms transparent.

  5. Inclusion by Design

We intentionally widen access for black-owned, women-owned, youth-led and underserved-area enterprises while maintaining strong commercial standards.

  6. Outcomes, Not Optics

We measure contracts, revenue, jobs, skills and long-term business sustainability — not vanity metrics.

  7. African Roots, Enterprise Standards

We build locally relevant ventures capable of competing and delivering at enterprise and international standards.

06Portfolio

Built within Cloud23 Ventures

All products →

Products conceived, built and commercialised inside the group. These are Cloud23-owned — distinct from the external SMEs developed through the programme.

External SMEs entering the development programme are not listed here. Programme outcomes are published only with the business’s consent, once there is something verified to report.

07Accountability

What we measure

No cohort has run yet, so there are no results to publish. Rather than a dashboard of zeros, here is exactly what will be tracked and reported.

  • SMEs supported
  • Products and pilots launched
  • Enterprise contracts secured
  • Revenue unlocked
  • Jobs created or sustained
  • People trained or certified
  • Women, youth and black-owned enterprises supported
  • Local supplier expenditure
  • Follow-on investment
  • Twelve-month venture survival and growth

Every accepted venture carries at least one measurable commercial outcome, one measurable capability outcome and one measurable socio-economic outcome, agreed in the Venture Compact.

FAQ

Cloud23 Ventures — frequently asked questions

Is Cloud23 Ventures an investment fund?

No. Cloud23 Ventures is a venture studio and SME growth platform. We contribute capability — product, technology, commercial strategy, governance and market access — rather than operating as a fund that deploys capital. Where a financial arrangement is appropriate, it is considered case by case and agreed in writing.

Who can apply?

Founders with a validated idea, operating SMEs seeking to strengthen their business, and corporates, funders or public-sector organisations wanting to develop SME pipelines. Mentors and specialists can also register their interest.

What stage must my business be at?

Venture Build suits validated ideas and early teams, including businesses not yet registered. SME Scale suits operating businesses with customers or revenue. If you are unsure, apply to the pathway that best describes you — fit is part of what the review assesses.

What support does Cloud23 provide?

Product and technology, business model and commercial strategy, go-to-market and sales enablement, governance and operational readiness, talent and skills, and enterprise market access. The exact support model is determined during assessment and documented in the Venture Compact.

Does Cloud23 take equity?

Not automatically. Equity, revenue share, licensing, fees or other commercial arrangements are considered case by case, depend on the nature and depth of the engagement, and must be agreed in writing before work begins.

Who owns my idea and intellectual property?

You do. Submitting an application transfers no intellectual property to Cloud23. Pre-existing IP remains yours. Where new IP is created jointly during a programme, its treatment is agreed explicitly in the Venture Compact before that work starts.

Is funding guaranteed?

No. Participation does not guarantee investment, funding, procurement or customer introductions. We are explicit about this because programmes that imply otherwise waste founders' time.

How are ventures selected?

Against a consistent internal scorecard covering problem and customer evidence, commercial model and traction, founder and team execution, product and technology fit, socio-economic potential, and governance and programme readiness. Shortlisted applicants go through a discovery clinic before a panel decision.

How long does the programme take?

The core engagement is a 90-day build or growth sprint, preceded by review and discovery, and followed by pilot preparation and measurement. Timelines vary with the venture's stage and the milestones agreed.

Can corporates sponsor an SME-development cohort?

Yes. Impact Partnerships support corporates, funders and public-sector organisations that want a credible SME pipeline, a challenge-led innovation programme or measurable enterprise-development outcomes. Scope, cohort size and outcomes are agreed up front.

Does participation guarantee procurement or B-BBEE recognition?

Participation does not guarantee investment, procurement, customer introductions, funding or B-BBEE recognition. Any ESD or SED recognition remains subject to the applicable Codes, supporting evidence and independent verification.

How will my application data be used?

Only to assess your application and run the programme. It is processed on a secure server, never sent to third parties for marketing, and handled in line with POPIA and our privacy policy. We do not ask for identity documents, bank statements or personal financial data at expression-of-interest stage. You can ask us to delete your application at any time.
