Unifying business and trade banking for SMEs at Stanbic Bank Uganda

Cloud23 engineered a unified banking platform for Stanbic Bank Uganda's Business & Commercial Banking division, integrating business, individual and SME trade accounts behind one view. SMEs gain a single view of their financial operations, real-time transfers between linked accounts and access to trade finance options previously out of reach.

The challenge

Ugandan SMEs banking with Stanbic held their finances in pieces: a personal account here, a business account there, a separate trade account elsewhere. Each account lived its own life, and the owner had to manage them separately.

The consequences were structural — fragmented financial management, slower transactions as money moved between disconnected accounts, and increased difficulty maintaining a clear picture of overall financial health. For a small business, where the owner's personal and commercial finances are often intertwined in practice, the fragmentation was a daily operational drag.

What was at stake

For SMEs, fragmented banking is more than an inconvenience: it slows cash flow, obscures the financial position decisions depend on, and — critically — keeps sophisticated products like trade finance out of reach, because no single view of the business exists to lend against.

For the bank, every account managed in isolation was a shallower customer relationship. Unifying the SME's accounts meant becoming the platform on which the business runs its finances, rather than one of several places it parks money.

The approach

Stanbic Bank Uganda worked with Cloud23 to engineer a platform that integrates business accounts with individual and SME trade accounts, rather than optimising each account type in isolation.

The design goal was a unified platform for managing financial operations: one place where an SME sees and moves its money across every account it holds, and through which the bank can extend trade services to businesses it can now see whole.

The solution

The delivered platform links an SME's business, individual and trade accounts into a single, unified financial-management experience. Account holders operate across their linked accounts from one place instead of juggling disconnected products.

Real-time fund transfers between linked accounts replace the slow movement of money across account boundaries, and the unified view opens the door to specialised trade finance services that fragmented accounts could not support.

Outcomes

The bank reports unified financial management for SME customers: one platform across business, individual and trade accounts, with real-time fund transfers between linked accounts improving cash flow management. No quantified metrics have been published; these outcomes are as reported by the bank.

The programme is credited with enhanced trade capabilities — SMEs have gained access to specialised trade finance services and trade finance options that were previously out of reach, extending products once reserved for larger corporates to smaller businesses.

What this programme illustrates

  • For SME banking, the unit of design is the business owner's whole financial life, not the individual account product — unifying accounts addresses problems no single-product improvement can.
  • Product access can be an integration outcome: trade finance became reachable for SMEs not because a new product was built, but because a unified platform finally gave the bank a whole-customer view to extend it against.
  • Real-time movement between linked accounts is the feature that makes unification tangible — customers experience the platform through their cash flow before they notice anything else.
